Around the Town
The Blackstone River passes through the town, and in the 18th century it was a useful source of power for mills along the river. The river was also used as a means of moving commerce from the Worcester area to Providence.
In its day the river was a socioeconomic force that connected rural areas to the opportunities of urban environments. The Blackstone Canal was completed in 1828, and Uxbridge was a likely stopping point for goods moving from city to city. The industry in the area attracted laborers, and immigration grew as workers came from Europe to fill open positions at the various mills.
Quakers from Rhode Island established a colony in the town and built the earliest meetinghouse in Uxbridge in 1770, a building which still survives. In that era the town was primarily a prosperous agricultural settlement with dispersed farms.The town experienced a resurgence in World War I as the mills supplied garments to solders during the war. Route 146 passes directly through Uxbridge which makes access to Worcester, Providence and Boston fairly convenient.

The Uxbridge Common District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and several properties in town are included in this district. Uxbridge retains over 60 Federalist houses as a legacy of its history.
