The Sudbury Reservoir occupies about 10% of the towns land mass so there is a rather low density of homes in the town. The basic principle of supply and demand means prices are also high.
Despite its location, Southborough is a quiet rural town that has numerous winding and scenic roads reminiscent of the towns past. The town is located 25 miles from Boston and 15 miles from Worcester and it is a convenient location for residents and businesses alike. A large amount of Massachusetts most prestigious companies have operations in the area. Two very prominent private boarding schools occupy a presence in Southborough, the Fay School and St. Mark’s.
Southborough is an affluent town, and was named #31 in the nation on CNN Money’s “100 Best Places to Live” in 2009. The town consistently ranks as one of the wealthiest communities in Worcester County. Good schools, location, and a community employed in the lucrative white-collar job market in the area attribute to its success.
About Southborough
The town was settled in the mid 17th century and incorporates the smaller villages of Cordaville, Fayville, and Southville. Like its neighbor, Nortborough, Southborough’s name is often shortened to Southboro. Like most New England towns land use was primarily for agricultural purposes. River systems were used to generate power for mills.
In 1898 a dam was constructed at the Sudbury River to create a reservoir to supply the drinking water of Boston. The Sudbury Reservoir, located in Southborough, allows limited use of its land. These include picnicking, hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and shoreline fishing.
Northborough and Southborough share a regional school district. Between the two towns there are many school options. The district supports one high school named the Algonquin Regional High School which is located in Northborough. It is also part of the Assabet Valley Regional Technical School District.
