Athol is located in the rural outskirts of Worcester County just north of the Quabbin Reservoir watershed. The town has a total area of 34 square miles and its economy is mostly industrial. Several rivers and streams meander through Athol and empty into the Connecticut River, over 2% of the town is water. The area has many hiking trails, and it gives visitors numerous opportunities to enjoy nature.
The national highway system had an ill effect on towns like Athol, and contributed to periods of economic decline, because transportation was diverted from these areas. Distances to the two major cities of Worcester and Springfield are equally long commutes. The driving distance between these cities constitutes the importance of an employment base in the area of Athol.
L.S. Starretts Company, which manufacturer’s tools, does business in Athol and gave the town its nickname of “Tool Town.”
Because the town is a distance from major cultural centers the residents tend to create functions unique to Athol’s citizens. Many summer events occupy the calendar, and some are well known in the state. Athol is a nice community especially for those that prefer being away from heavily travelled cities.
Athol is part of the Athol Royalston Regional School District. The town is also part of the Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School District in Fitchburg.
